What Are the Biggest Causes of Injury in San Bernardino?

Typically, there are two or more contributing factors to accidents in San Bernardino. In 2020, the California Office of Traffic Safety put together a list of the most dangerous settings.

1. DUI. Drunk driving is a significant contributing factor in a wide variety of auto accidents. Mothers Against Drunk Driving estimates that each day nationwide, 800 people suffer personal injuries from being involved in a drunk driving crash. When you consider that many drunk drivers are not caught on the first occasion of this dangerous practice – statistics suggest it may be closer to the 80th time – these figures are staggering.
2. Speeding. Exceeding the speed limit is indicated in 27% of traffic accidents in San Bernardino County. The most dangerous roads are the I-15, Bear Valley Road in Apple Valley, and the Cajon Pass. Going over the posted speed of 75 mph, becoming distracted, or being impaired is a dangerous combination.
3. Nighttime driving. The hours between 9 p.m. and 2:59 a.m. are the most dangerous times to be on the road.
4. Being a pedestrian. Since 2015, authorities noted a 2% increase in collisions involving pedestrians. Concurrently, injuries and fatalities in this group are on the rise.
5. Unlicensed drivers. As noted by the San Bernardino Police Department, about 1.3 million Californians have had their driver’s licenses suspended or revoked. In ten years ending in 2007, 21% of drivers involved in fatal auto accidents did not have a valid license. We are doing worse than the national average, which is about 14%.
